Hello, this is Damian Niquette. And this is EvoFoam Pest Control podcast. I want to thank you for tuning in today. Today we’re going to talk about crickets.
What Time Of Year Are Crickets Out?
In particular, they call them crickets, house crickets, field crickets, you know, I just got an email this morning from a chemical provider, that is a solicitation trying to sell some products, of course that we can use in a defense of crickets to help prevent and control populations as they definitely increase here in the near future. You know, they’re very active this time of year getting into the late summer and up into fall. And you know, and then yeah, then they dig they kind of go away. And and people always assume that with a lot of pest issues is that they just go away and you don’t need pest control. And I always tell our, our customers that, you know, it’s very important to to have a year round, reoccurring pest treatment done on the outside of your home.
And the reason for it, speaking to crickets is that they actually overwinter in what we call the nymphal stage, they you know, you have an egg and then they hatch and then the nymphal stage. And they’ll actually get into warm pockets of wall voids or get into your weak poles and get into your the walls of your home or your business. And overwinter they’ll emerge typically in in the early summer, late spring, early summer, and then you really get an invasion of them in the late summer, up until fall.
Cricket Infestation In Austin, Texas Homes
So it’s coming, you know, the, they’re trying to sell me stuff already. And but we know that they’re coming This morning, I just went down to get some gas in my service vehicle and got a cup of coffee in the gas station. And as I was checking out paying for my coffee, I looked down and seen about two or three crickets in there. So they’re already starting, they’re going to get much worse. If you recall a couple of years ago here in the Central Texas Austin area. We had quite the infestation of crickets, I guess we got more calls about crickets than we ever have that year. Businesses especially were highly affected by them. It was crazy the numbers. So that was that was fun. That lasted for a couple of weeks or so. But you know, crickets are always an issue every year. We’re not always going to have huge infestations like that. I think this year, due to all the rain we’ve had and that freeze that we had. I think more folks are going to experience cricket issues.
How To Get Rid Of Crickets In Homes?
I don’t know if it’s going to be quite as bad but the potentials there. So you definitely want to protect your home and we’re going to talk a little bit about what we can do to help control that and prevent some problems from coming inside your home or your business.
- First of all, you know when it comes to the exterior of the home which obviously that they’re they’re typically you know, breeding and coming from, moisture is a big problem. You don’t want to overwater your lawn I talk to customers about that all time.
- Another little housekeeping matter at the address on the outside of your home is your mulch. You know a lot of folks get new mulch every single year on their home. You know they they do it because you know the curb appeal they want to look nice I get it we do that in our home as well. But it’s really important that you do it right. And whether you do it yourself or you hire somebody, you need to make sure that you’re removing the old mulch, because what happens is you see when you take the new mulch and you lay it on top of the old mulch all you’re doing is creating more levels and more layers of decay and pests thrive on that that rotting that organic matter that decay they feed upon that and it just it just creates a thicker layers of harborage areas for insects to breed in crickets are no exception to that
- Another thing when it when it when it comes to crickets is around AC unit. If you have your drainage isn’t done isn’t proper on the outside you have a lot of leaky pipe next to their water pipe that can come all the way from the attic as well all around that area AC you want to make sure that you don’t have any any water issues there any stagnant standing water, you know, not only for crickets, but other pests as well. And I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in in customers attics and and found a bunch of crickets up in that air handler up in their attic where that drip pan is I’ve I’ve found crickets by the dozens and many houses over the years. So you know that’s something to keep in mind too.
How To Keep Crickets Out Of The House
- If you have crickets or I suggest that you get them to inspect your attic. And there’s things that us Pest Control companies can do. You know, baiting the attic is a is a definitely a good solution for controlling those crickets that happened to make it into your attic. And then you got to think about why do they make into my home to begin with, you know, exclusionary service, what we call exclusionary services is sealing up the home, you know, those crickets climb up the walls of our home or business and get through what we call it, you know, the roof return sofet that you want to make sure that you don’t have large gaps, not only can wildlife get in there, but those crickets can easily enter that, that attic and get in there. So sealing off roof returns is very crucial as well.
- The most common way is our doorways, threshold, the doorway, you want to make sure you don’t have a light, I harp on that all the time to customers, you know, we can as Pest Control companies can infect those insects and they’re gonna die. They’re arachnids, like a spider scorpions, whatnot. But if you have a gap and opening where they haven’t, they have the ability to get inside your home, you know, whether they’re infected or not are going to die, they find their way in the home. So it’s really important to try to get keep everything sealed up as as tight as possible and, you know, allow them to be outside because now they got a greater chance of actually getting in contact or with some, you know, different types of insecticides that US companies use, and as well as, you know, baiting on the outside, if they’re outside, there’s more readily available there, they’re more likely to pick it up rather than accidentally wander into the house. And, and that’s what we can we classify them as occasional invaders. There’s a lot of different insects and arachnids that are considered occasional invaders. And, you know, prevention that merely is just making sure things sealed like your wolf spiders or scorpions, those are those are occasional invaders as well, your American cockroaches, just like just like crickets, no different. So you want to make sure everything’s sealed.
